Make calls with Android

First, download the Google Voice Android app. Once downloaded, make sure Google Voice is set up correctly on your phone. During set up, select the option that enables you to dial directly from the phone.
Now you're ready to place a call:
  1. Launch the Google Voice Android app.
  2. Call a contact just as you would without Google Voice.
  3. If you’ve configured Google Voice to ask whether you want to use it each time you place a call, click Call with Google Voice. If you’ve configured Google Voice to use it for all calls, this message doesn’t appear.
If you're placing a toll call, you'll hear a message from Google Voice that tells you what the cost per minute is for the call and how many minutes of talk time you have left in your Google Voice account based on this rate.

Make international phone calls

To place an international call through Google Voice, you first need to make sure your device is set up for it.
  1. Launch Google Voice for Android.
  2. Press the Menu button, then select Settings.
  3. Under "Making Calls," choose to either Use Google Voice for all calls or Only use Google Voice for international calls.
To check the credit balance in your Google Voice account:
  1. Go to Menu.
  2. Select Balance.
International calls use standard cell phone plan minutes and are charged against your Google Voice credit, at Google Voice international rates.
For all international calls through Google Voice, you should hear a message notifying you of the call rate. If you don't hear the message, your call is not going through Google Voice and your call may be subject to your carrier's rates.

Receiving text messages from unrecognized numbers

When you send a text message through Google Voice, the text message appears to be sent from your Google number. When someone sends a text message to your Google number, and it's forwarded to your mobile phone, it won't appear as from the sender's actual number (e.g., the SMS may appear from 1-406-xxx-xxxx or 1-972-xxx-xxxx). This is so that when you reply to the 1-406-xxx-xxxx number or 1-972-xxx-xxxx number from your phone, the text message you send appears to be sent from your Google number and will be saved in your Google Voice inbox.
